New Mental Capacity Legislation for NI 2012

Copyright Kevin Cooper Photoline: Two Northern Ireland executive ministers Edwin Poots, Minister for Health, Social Services, and Public Safety, and David Ford, Minister for Justice, spoke to an important conference, which examined radical new mental capacity legislation for NI. The half day conference examined radical and progressive proposals to protect the rights of those with Mental Health and Mental Capacity issues, when making personal healthcare, finance or legal decisions. Organised by Chambré PA in association with Disability Action, the event took place in the MAC, Belfast and discussed the development of the Northern Ireland Mental Capacity (Health, Welfare, and Finance) Bill. The conference, which was chaired by Seamus McKee, BBC Radio Ulster also heard from a number of experts Kevin Doherty, Director of Services, Disability Action, Pat McConville, Mental Health Legislation Unit – DHSSPS, Professor Roy McClelland, former Chair of the Bamford Review, Dr Colin Harper, Manager, Disability Action’s Centre on Human Rights, Pat McConville , DHSSPS, Professor Roy McClelland. After a short coffee break the conference also heard from Tom Haire, Head of Criminal Law Branch - Department of Justice, Dr Frederick Browne, Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist, Bill Halliday, Chief Executive, MindWise NV and Clare Irvine, Principal Legal Officer NI Law Commission.
