Santa Maria dei Carmini (Venice, Italy)

Originally called Santa Maria Assunta, the church became associated with the Carmelite monastery nearby. Begun in 1286, Santa Maria dei Carmini was consecrated in 1348.

The façade, of brick and marble with sculptures including the prophets Elisha and Elijah, said to be the founders of the Carmelite order, was completed in the 1500s.

The bell tower is topped by a statue of Madonna del Carmine, sculpted in 1982 as a replacement of the original which was destroyed by a lightning strike.

Santa Maria dei Carmini is located in the Dorsoduro neighborhood of Venice.
