Saint-Sulpice (Paris, France)

Begun in 1646, Saint-Sulpice was dedicated to Sulpitius II, who was born to parents who were nobles, who donated his large inheritance to the Catholic Church and to the poor, and who devoted his life to good works and the study of Scripture, who became the Bishop of Bourges about the year 624 and was ultimately canonized St. Sulpitius the Pious.

Built over an older church from the 1200s, construction of Saint-Sulpice continued into the 18th century, stopping and starting and outlasting many architects.

The two towers were added after 1766, and the next architect rebuilt the north tower, making it taller and modifying its design, intending to do the same to the south tower but construction was interrupted by the French Revolution and the towers remain mismatched.
