Hampton Court Palace (London, England)

Along with the great power that came with being the chief minister to King Henry VIII, great wealth came as well and in 1514, Cardinal Thomas Wolsey acquired land twelve miles southwest of central London and set about building the finest palace in England, hosting the king in the state apartments in 1525.

Only three years later, Wolsey had fallen from favor due to his failure to secure an annulment of King Henry's marriage to Catherine of Aragon. In an attempt to save his head, Wolsey gave Hampton Court to the king as a gift.

Soon after taking over, Henry greatly expanded on Wolsey's construction to make room for his entourage of over one thousand people.

Following Henry's death in 1547, Hampton Court Palace housed his successors and was again modernized and expanded late in the 1600s.
