Garratts at Umzinto, Natal

Umzinto shed in Natal, South Africa in August 1975, on the 93 mile long Kelso - Donnybrook (via Ixopo) line. The line was opened in 1908 and closed in 1985-87. Most of the track was lifted and ended up on the Welsh Highland Railway in the UK.

The engine nearest the camera is NGG16 Nr 152, and is a 2-6-2+2-6-2 wheel arrangement. This dates back to the success of the NGG13 class originally introduced in 1927.

A total of 19 examples of the NGG16's were built; 4 by Cockerill, Belgium in 1937; 8 by Beyer-Peacock in Manchester in 1939, followed by 7 more by B-P in 1951.

In 1968 the last batch of 8 was built in Germiston, Transvaal, using boilers supplied by Hunslet in Leeds, and were the last steam locos built for the South African Railways. This is the 4th one of that build.

These were the most powerful 2' gauge steam engines built; evidence of the restricted room in the cab can be seen by the green swingout seat used by the driver, when safe !

This loco is currently on the Sandstone Estates site near Bloemfontein.
