TITLE: Rick Cole speaking in front of the La Pintoresca Branch Library, Pasadena, California

DATE: 1985(?)

NOTES: Perhaps taken at a rededication ceremony in 1985(?). Gentleman with upraised hand is Rick Cole, Pasadena city council member. Gentleman behind him in the white shirt and tie is Ed Synaka, library director. Rick Cole was born in 1953. He attended Blair High School in Pasadena, California, received his AB in American Studies from Occidental College and his MS in Journalism in 1979 at the Columbia University, Graduate School of Journalism (Rick Cole). He founded the Pasadena Weekly newspaper in 1984 before moving into politics. From 1983 to 1995, Mr. Cole was a member of the Pasadena City Council for 12 years. He held the position of mayor from 1992 to 1994. He has been known to have an “intense, willful side.” As an example, while he was the mayor of Pasadena, he revealed a T-shirt with the words “Tournament of Racists” during the 1992 Pasadena Rose Bowl Parade, to criticize the lack of minorities on the parade’s governing board. As mayor, he was highly invested in issues of city planning and the General Plan. After leaving the politics of Pasadena, Mr. Cole went on to become the City Manager of Azusa, CA, and Ventura, CA, and has held other governmental positions. He is currently working for Los Angeles Mayor, Eric Garcetti, as the Deputy Mayor for Budget and Innovation (Smith, 2014).
