Western Montpellier Snake (Malpolon monspessulanus)

First of two Montpelliers seen basking among rocks at Guadalmar, Malaga Province, Spain. This larger snake has been observed at the same location on previous visits to the reserve. As can be seen here, it always likes to keep an eye on people passing by on the path and is quick to disappear into the cracks between the rocks should anyone get too close. Montpellier Snakes are far harder to approach than the Horseshoe Whip Snakes that also frequent the area.
