Memorial Milestone
On the London side of Shooters Hill. An 18th century milestone converted into a war memorial by the addition of an extra commemorative plate giving casualties and distance to Ypres.
The distances are 7 miles to Dartford. 8 miles to London Bridge. The third plate says:
130 miles to Ypres.
In defending the Salient our casualties were:-
90,000 killed,
70,500 missing
410,000 wounded.
The stone has been broken and repaired. It was apparently rescued by the vicar of Christ Church, Shooters Hill in which grounds it now stands.
