The heroes

On Explore october, 21st 2011 ~ Thank you ~

Rescue helicopter from Air Glaciers. With those of Air Zermatt, these pilots are beyond the best of the world.

Thank ourselves, mad alpinists and ski mountaineerers, they are involved in difficult rescue operations all the year long !

During the Kossovo war, the neutral Switzerland send help to civilians, helicopters and pilots to rescue the civilan people flying Kossovo to Albania over mountains with children into deep snow.

The pilots from these two companies from Sion and Zermatt (Valais/ Wallis) were the only,

beyond many issued from several other lands, to continue the rescue operations during worst meteo conditions, fog and even snowstorm. In an unknown region, without knowing where the aerial cables are, it is even more dangerous.

I was rescued by them, some years ago in a snowstorm, while climbing down the northface of the Petit Combin. I was on a stony-rocky unstable ridge, partially covered with fresh snow. I had no significant injury apart some frostbites, but it became so dangerous to continue downwards that I evaluated the chance to die in following 10 minutes to 50%. This shot was taken from 3180 m on the middle ridge of the northface (Arète du Milieu) www.flickr.com/photos/50718005@N08/5103291870/in/photostream
