NGC 6946, The Fireworks Galaxy, in Cepheus
The Fireworks Galaxy, a face-on spiral galaxy between Cepheus and Cygnus. This galaxy is approximately 22.5 million light years away. This image was captured on 8-30-13 at the General Nathan Twinning Observatory (GNTO), the dark sky site of The Albuquerque Astronomical Association (TAAS), in Belen, New Mexico. Gusty winds made the acquisition difficult; almost half of the sub-frames obtained were discarded due to star-streaking.
Equipment: C11-HD with focal reducer (f/7, 2000mm)
Losmandy G-11
SBIG ST4000XCM camera
Conditions: 12 x 10' sub-frames were deemed suitable for incorporation. Another 12 were discarded due to wind-induced shaking.
Camera cooled to -5 C
Processed in DSS and Photoshop CS-2
