Japanese Knotweed - Fallopia japonica - Grrrr...
This large herbaceous perennial, originating from Eastern Asia and first introduced to the UK as an ornamental garden plant in the 19th century, has subsequently established itself in the wild as a highly invasive, most aggressive and fast growing pest. It suppresses all our native plant life and growth, and has unfortunately become widespread throughout the country. It can now be found in a huge range of habitats, including roadside verges, railway cuttings and along the banks of rivers, streams and ponds.
Last spring was the first time I had spotted it at Benholm Burn and already this year there are signs of new shoots appearing further downstream. Although quite attractive and photogenic, at this early stage especially the colours are quite stunning, it really is a horrible plant to find on your patch as it is so extremely difficult to eradicate or to even control.
