Deo Gloria, Barton

The dredger 'Deo Gloria' passes the swing bridges at Barton, low in the water with a full load of silt from above Mode Wheel Locks, central Manchester.

October 2020 has seen a burst of dredging activity on the Manchester Ship Canal, initially with the vessel 'Sospan Dau'. 'Deo Gloria' is a similar trailing suction hopper dredger and has now taken over the work.

The nearer bowstring swing bridge (partly concealed by the ship) carries Barton Road; beyond that is the unique swing aqueduct which carries the Bridgewater Canal over the Manchester Ship Canal.

After a morning of atrocious weather, the skies brightened briefly and for once I was lucky with a burst of sunlight at exactly the right moment!
