The clay & sand soil allows some drainage of water but not much. Clay is not water soluble so it is hard for water to pass through. This is great for the mossy plants who like moist environments. If water doesn't flow well then nutrients doesn't either.

There were trees, and mosquitoes near the soil. The plants and animals make up the humus or organic matter found in the soil and this provides nutrients. Yes sand is eroded from large rocks, it is just sediment. If it did down pour and sediments were loosened up the sediments would flow to the pond. The ground seemed pretty intact though.

Soil texture determines the amount of water, the nutrients, and the type of plants that live there. Also animals and small insects too.
