Hucknall St Mary Magdalene Hope Detail adj IMG_1590
The pearl-edged banner with it's daisy encrusted background caught my attention because it resembles fine niello work. By the figure of Hope is an anchor, and her banner shows Christ's sacrifice (the cross forms part of an anchor) to bring the hope of salvation to mankind.
Apparently the anchor was very important as a Christian symbol during Roman persecution, before the 4thC AD, after which the cross became dominant. Hebrews 6:19: "We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure."

This is a detail from a window at the inner corner of the W-wall of the N-transept. It is an allegorical depiction of Christian Virtues, Faith, Charity and Hope (which in the central medallion proclaims that the greatest of these is Charity). Behind the two outer virtues young children hold banners. In the left light Faith holds a cup and her banner shows a bible with 'the word of God'. The central figure holds the flame of faith and clasps babes, so is presumably Charity. The window was given in memorial to Eliza, Sarah and Anne Godber by their nephew John and is dated 1892.
