Hucknall St Mary Magdalene Kempe 11 adj IMG_1488

This window, marked 28 on the green plan, is at the inner corner of the W-wall of the N-transept. It is an allegorical depiction of Christian Virtues, Faith, Hope and Charity (not necessarily in that order) and in the central medallion proclaims that the greatest of these is Charity.

The window was given in memorial to Eliza, Sarah and Anne Godber by their nephew John and is dated 1892.

Behind the two outer virtues hold young children hold banners. In the left light Faith holds a cup and her banner shows a bible with 'the word of God'. The central figure holds the flame of faith and clasps babes, so is presumably Charity. By Hope is an anchor, and her banner shows Christ's sacrifice (curiously the cross forms part of an anchor) to bring the hope of resurrection to mankind.

Apparently the anchor was very important as a Christian symbol during Roman persecution, before the 4thC AD, after which the cross became dominant.
