S&T Dave Evans 800pc Intercepted Correspondence JF Lewis With 1100pc Optimago & 500pc Wentworth 4
Lower: Nicki B couldn't be at the house party, but sent two boxes of puzzles and a script to present Dave Evans' s work.
S&T Jigsaw Shop Dave Evans 800pc Intercepted Correspondence JF Lewis 55.5x85cm, Shaped outline, interrupted edge, line-cut.
Volunteers putting it together discovered how large it was and how tricky to assemble to a deadline!
Top: Two sizes of Laser-cut Wentworth jigsaws, 1500pc & 500pc, of the same painting. This allows you to see how Dave chose to shape his jigsaw to create a more interesting outline.
In the Sept 2023 BCD magazine Nicki wrote an article about Dave Evans and her experiences in commissioning jigsaws from him from 2005-2016/21. Nicki B has the largest collection of Dave's jigsaws that I know of within BCD. I remember Dave saying that aesthetically he valued uniformity in size/shape across his jigsaws - to increase the difficulty of assembly - and presumably from his early Victory training.
In 1995 he opened the Jigsaw Shop at the Old Brewery, Weymouth. He used 5-7mm birch ply and had serious equipment including a huge bed allowing him to cut very large blanks. His pieces are generally relatively large, long, and very tactile - features Nicky appreciates.
Nicki describes his style as "It is interlocking and never push-fit with every potential colour break honoured.@ He studied the image carefully, mulling over which cutting choices to make. When he started to cut, each colour section was separately cut out and then individually cut in a linear or circular flow to suit whatever the colour section represented. The result is a puzzle that has a flowing cut going in all directions. His signature dolphin was located in water if at all possible or an area of background colour and all my commissioned puzzles had my letters “S” and “N” incorporated. ... His edge pieces never join and only fitted together with the help if an internal joining piece."
