Puzzlewood 1864pc The Blue Cloak by Pieter Brueghel the Elder 3D-enhanced linecut 31x22in 2024 David P DSC02775

David P is showing the most amazing masterwork by Heather Prydderch of Puzzlewood. It is an extremely large & complex 3D-enhanced jigsaw. David recalled that after losing out on an ebay auction of a flat version of the painting in March 2023 he commissioned Heather to create one for him. Heather had a huge backlog of commissions and David waited patiently until 2024. It took her about a month to cut.

Puzzlewood 1864pc The Blue Cloak by Pieter Brueghel the Elder 1559, interlocking, line-cut and 3D-enhanced 31x22in. Cut 2024. The painting is also known as Netherlandish Proverbs. David explained three of the proverbs and pointed us to the Wikipedia page:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netherlandish_Proverbs

In the painting, people, animals and objects offer literal illustrations of Dutch-language proverbs and idioms which share Brueghel's theme of the absurdity, wickedness and foolishness of humans. Its original title, The Blue Cloak or The Folly of the World, indicates that Bruegel's intent was to catalogue human folly. The Blue cloak owner is pulling the cloak over her husband to conceal her adultery. The man biting a pillar is a religious hypocrite. The woman carrying fire & water is two-faced and a stirrer-up of trouble.

The flat version came about because Heather was recalling that she didn't get the chance to pick images anymore, because she was doing almost entirely commissions. Bronwen then gave her a commission to choose an image herself and this was the result:

Puzzlewood 865pc The Blue Cloak or Netherlandish Proverbs 1559 Pieter Brueghel elder linecut 22x16in no903.

In March 2023 Bronwen sold The Blue Cloak on ebay and I was the lucky winner, with David as underbidder. So this magnificent 3D-enhanced jigsaw owes its existence to a series of happy accidents between four friends and the love for an image by an extraordinarily gifted cutter.
