Andrew Kershaw & Judy B Betterton Jigsaw Cutting Friends 1
Left: I had been wanting a jigsaw cut by BCD member Andrew Kershaw for some time, so I am very grateful for this one from David S. Andrew cut it in March 2005. Sadly, Andrew became too ill to cut or attend meetings around the end of 2017, and passed away in Spring 2024.
Andrew Kershaw 393pc Nature Morte Vivante Salvatore Dali, 10x13in, March 2005. Interlocking frame with line-cut push-fit centre, some pieces with angular geometric shapes. In putting this together I started with the interlocking edge, then worked on the blue, followed by the green Romanesco broccoli head and anything which looked distinctive. I was wary of the geometric red patterned area - but of course I finished it in the end!
Lower Centre: The same print cut by American cutter Judy Brokaw Betterton who was a very close friend of Andrew's.
(Judy Brokaw Betterton) Puzzle Junkie no118 287pc Fast Moving Still Life Dali 13fig, cut Feb10 10pt5x8pt5in.
They may well have visited the Dali museum together. Judy's cutting styles are more varied than Andrew's. Here Judy has used a jumbled allover interlocking style with round knobs, plus some wicked line-cutting around the broccoli and the geometric red patterns.
The painting belongs to the Dali Museum at St Petersburg, Florida. David visited this museum during a business trip around 1980, when he brought back a portfolio of prints of Dali's work. He was going to take me to the museum in April 2020, when the pandemic stopped the trip.
Upper Centre & Right: Judy cut this small puzzle, no18 in her output for Andrew on 18 May 2005.
Judy Brokaw Betterton (Puzzle Junkie) no18 118pc The Norfolk Broads travel poster, 4.3x6.8in. It has been boxed in the same style as Andrew's jigsaws, with a typewritten sheet as a solving record, and was probably still in his possession when his sister Sue dispersed Andrew's things. The jigsaw is cut with a tricky interlocking border, whilst the centre is push-fit without knobs. Andrew lived in Norfolk and skippered a boat on the Broads, so this print was full of meaning for the friends.
The small photo of Judy is from her facebook page, which contains detailed notes about the jigsaws she cut over a short period.

Lower Left: A photo of prominent BCD members from the 2006 House Party at Eastbourne, including Penny, Andrew, Tom & Judy, taken by Rick Tucker. There were many American delegates to this meeting. Andrew visited three Puzzle Parleys and Judy visited England several times. I met her in 2017 at a BCD meeting hosted by Tom & Trish Tyler.
