BCD Mtg Jun23 Pears Annual Large Colour Dewar's Whisky Adverts1
Dewar's Whisky was a frequent advertiser in Pears Annuals, providing many of the larger 'full-page' colour adverts that might tempt amateur cutters as material for small jigsaws. They often appear as framed fine art paintings. Here are two vintage examples.
Left: Dewar's Whisky Advert The Banquet, from 1914 Pears Annual. There is a signature in the lower lhs corner, but I can't read it.
Upper Centre: Vintage 650pc Banquet/Royal Event, Dewar's Whisky Advert, 1repl 19x16in 1920s. This seems larger than the annual, so perhaps it was a promotional print supplied by the company (see below). The jigsaw belonged to John H, who sold it in Aug17 for a large sum.
Upper Right: Vintage Dewar's Whisky 455pc Serving Whisky 5pcmiss. No dimensions given for this beautifully cut jigsaw, sadly now in need of much tender care. It was sold in Apr20 for a modest £24+pp - and I wish I'd bid on it.
Lower Centre-Left: Bob Armstrong Fall22 Parker Pastime 234pc Bringing in the Pudding Frank Dadd 1940s 10x13in ply linecut 26fig round knob. This is so similar thematically that I couldn't resist including it in this collage.
In 'Bubbles Early Advertising Art from A&F Pears Ltd', editor Mike Dempsey says there is a link between Pears and Dewar's. One of Dewar's iconic images was Landseer's 'Monarch of the Glen', which was acquired by Thomas J Barratt, Pears entrepreneur and advertising disruptor - it appeared as a Dewar's 'framed' advert in the 1916 Pears Annual.
Lower Centre-Right: Dewar's Whisky Advert, 'Piper', from pg4 of the 1917 Pears Annual. I don't recognise the painting - which is 'in the possession of John Dewar & Sons Ltd, Scotch Whisky Distillers'. A bagpiper with dog converses with a man through a split wooden door, who offers him a wee dram (to play ... or not to play - no really, I love bagpipes!)
Lower Right: This painting, 'Then & Now' shows a Scottish gentleman defending his bottle against the grasping hands of his ancestors stepping out of the family portraits. It was used in the 1913 Pears Annual for a Dewar's advert, with small text below it offering a print suitable for framing in 12 colours, 17.5x12.5in (omitting the word DEWAR), to be supplied anywhere in the world for only 6d in stamps. It also appeared in the 1918 Annual pg5, with the text,
'Then and Now - In the Past a few things were hard to get at all times. In the Present all good things are hard to get at any time; And the Future is not yet here.'
