BCD Mtg Jun23 AVN Jones Australian Series 150pc Blue Gums Azure Shade An Australian Bush Picnic 36
Alan Sudbury gave a talk about the South African and Australian Series at the 2019 BCD House Party. The series comprised six titles, four from paintings by Fortunino Matania. The 300pc jigsaws were 5s, the 250pc ones cost 2s 6d.
This jigsaw is a 150pc version of Matania's Picnic under Blue Gums - the full title is 'In the Blue Gums Azure Shade an Australian Bush Picnic'. I recorded a 350/300pc version of this being assembled at the Nov 2015 meeting.
See comment below: The three boxes are from top left to lower left:
- 300pc An Australian Nocturne
- 150pc Hitting the Australian Trail
- 300pc Surf Bathing by spotlight - sport of the Australian summer.
The two by CE Turner were:
- Snow Sport and Leafy Trees - see below
- Turtle Riding in a Blue Lagoon.
A.V.N. Jones & Co., Ltd, of 64, Fore Street, London, E.C.2, produced good quality puzzles in various series. The Australian Series is similar in style, but considerably less extensive than the South African Series (both probably produced c1920-1930's).
This information is from Jigasaurus, which has six examples:

Update at June 2023:
Unlike the puzzles of the company's South African Series, the boxes for these do not list the other titles available, nor are they numbered, so the full extent of the series is not yet known. They are very similar in subject, cutting style, size and box design and are also of c1930's origin.
The box lid for each example quotes them as featuring Artistic Reproductions in fine colours of Picturesque Scenes in Australia, and listing themes of: Bushlands, Surfing Beaches, Mountain Scenery, Great Barrier Reef, Sport and Social Life, all quoted as being Subjects reproduced by the courtesy of The Australian National Travel Association, Grand Buildings, Trafalgar Square, London W.C.2, and The Sphere. The artwork for most of the puzzles is by the Italian artist Fortunino Matania (1881-1963), but British artist C.E. Turner, whose work appears extensively within the South African Series, produced the painting of Turtle Riding into a Blue Lagoon.
The themes listed appear to indicate that six subjects are represented and all six feature in the examples shown here, so it seems likely that this is the full series!
Bushlands: In the Blue Gums Azure Shadow: An Australian Bush Picnic
Surfing Beaches: Surf Bathing by Spotlight. Sport of the Australian Summer
Mountain Scenery: Hitting the Australian Trail
Great Barrier Reef: Turtle Riding into a Blue Lagoon
Sport: Snow Sport Amid Leafy Trees
Social Life: Australian Nocturne, An
[The five known titles in 2015:
300pc Australian Nocturne
150pc Hitting the Trail
350pc ? 'In the Blue Gums' Azure Shade an Australian Bush Picnic'
150pc Surf Bathing by Spotlight, Sport of the Australian Summer
150pc Turtle Riding into a Blue Lagoon.
NEW Snow Sports Amid Leafy Trees.
I have seen one other very small title c55pc 9x7.5in, with the title 'Australian National Travel Snow Sports Amid Leafy Trees'. There was no box and it could conceivably be a Simpkin Marshall Sport and Travel image or an amateur cut.]
