A1 Puzzle Club c1000-1500pc Bathing Beauties Matania Southport Poster DSC03096
This jigsaw, cut from most of a travel poster for Southport by Fortunino Matania, appears on page 59 of Tom Tyler's British Jigsaw Puzzles of the 20thC.
His book states, "Puzzles from the A1 Jigsaw Club have appeared in large numbers indicating that it was a sizeable and long-running library..." In his summary section he assigns the club to c1920-1939 and mentions the cubed shaped boxes. The illustration is half a page, under the title 'Early Wooden Puzzles', with a Victory Gold Box Super Cut (Toy Shop), opposite a c1909 Pears Annual jigsaw (Compulsory Education).
This jigsaw appears to have been supplied by Dave Cooper for the book illustration, as it was sold by his daughter in July 2019 after Dave's death. I have no record of it being in an original box when acquired or sold, so we have no clues on the cutter's identity. Nor do we know how much of the restoration (5repl) had been done by Dave C. Its piece count is also uncertain - Tom stating a 1000pc & Angie c1500pc.
Vintage A1 Library c1500pc The Bathing Pool (see Tom's Book, travel poster Southport, F Matania 5repl, extensive line-cutting, semi-interlocking cut, £110+pp.
The 2017 BCD House Party had the theme Story-telling & Advertising Jigsaws, and examples of this image were shown in one of the lectures by John H, which featured many travel poster jigsaws.
Below you can see an Edenbridge jigsaw which focuses on the girl with the parasol.
A modern hand-cut of a reproduction of the poster had been cut by Andrew Kershaw, who used to run the East Anglian Puzzle Club/Library.
