PF - Two Library Puzzles Believed to Be Hobson Library One Made By WG Evans 15
A curious triptych image was used for this jigsaw that was clearly produced for Hobson Library by a cutter from WG Evans (themselves thought to have been sourced from Tuck). Since I bought this jigsaw in Oct 2021, I think I've seen this image (properly arranged, unlike here) on another jigsaw, but I couldn't find that one in my records when I came to do this collage. I haven't done the jigsaw yet. This is only the second jigsaw from Hobson's Library known to us.
Top Left - The jigsaw with missing piece
Hobson Library no 3G8 (398) 410pc Magdalen College Oxford, 1pcmiss 20x11.5in. Pieces have 398 written on them. Form of box, top and side label (lozenge, not shown) indicate that this jigsaw was once part of Hobson's Library. Cutting style show it to have been produced by WG Evans.
Lower Centre: Box of Magdalen College Oxford jigsaw.
Top Right: Hobson Library, The Elms Spalding no 331 465pc Pears Image Family Worship, 17.5x13in, photographed at a BCD meeting in 2015. This side label is shown Lower Left.
Nicki's piece about Hobson Library in the BCD Research document:
Hobson Puzzle Club 1910’s-1920’s
Location: The Elms, SpaldingRun and cut (?) by Miss Hobson.
Boxes: A5 deep A5 heavy brown card with puzzle details and a note requesting subscribers not to lose pieces or allow pets to gnaw them. Puzzle label on end giving no.
Cut: Superb semi-interlocking and push fit in thick, high quality ply. Each piece is numbered with the puzzle number on the back.
Example: 465 piece Pears print “Family Worship” 13” x 17.5” No 331.Comments: A small club. Examples are rare. Dating of club is based on Pears image.
