BCD House Party 2023 S&T Wooden City 2000pc Space Alan S DSC02625

Our first show & tell session was on Saturday. Alan S presented two laser-cut jigsaws.

This is the largest size of Polish manufacturer Wooden City's 'Space Odyssey'. The 2000pc jigsaw measures 80x53cm and is currently on offer at $70 - the design is by Adrian Chesterman and it is very attractive. It has a patterned backing of black & golden-beige, 120+ whimsies, and generally small interlocking pieces.

Alan said, "It has 2000 laser-cut pieces from wood composition which makes it the largest one of this type I have ever done, and it has 120 whimsies of all sorts of things, many or space and communication-related. I did find two quality issues in that some of the pieces had not separated fully and had to be cut apart, also the design is printed directly on to the substrate rather than the more usual way of printing it on to paper which is then stuck onto the wood or card. Although it might be cheaper it is easier to damage the design and in this jigsaw it’s left a grain so you can figure out which way round the pieces go.

Anyway this monster kept me occupied during Christmas and the New Year and by that time I knew more about the Solar System! ... There is a design on the back, but it is too repetitive to do the puzzle in reverse."

Their website says they offer 37 pictures, in 4 different sizes with 5 themes of figures for laser cutting. All the images are very bright (except Elephant Dreams), and busy, so they are mostly not my style at all. The range includes two world maps, an endangered animal world map, photo-images of cities, some underwater seascape drawings and the usual drossy animal-selfies. I brought a Wooden City 1000pc Eifel Tower with Fireworks jigsaw to the house party which was started on the last day. I also have a small Elephant Dreams (a gift) and a 1000pc In the Flower Shop.

The packaging style avoids plastic, coming in a cubic corrugated cardboard box with adhesive labels, and the pieces are held in a paper bag within. Other Wooden City products come in a flat plywood box with loose fitting lid (like the Unidragon packaging style).
