East Anglian Library 250pc DMcD Canadian Winter 14pt5x12in 1959 DSC02285

A jigsaw bought from David S in March 2022 and my second East Anglian Club jigsaw.

-

I pulled this out of storage for the theme Trains, Boats & Planes but didn't get time to do it then.

It came up on ebay in March 2022, in a series of these library jigsaws released by David S. I wanted something by Andrew Kershaw and having enjoyed a 230pc Fruit jigsaw I fancied this as a keepsake of my 2019 Western Canada holiday, when we travelled through the Rockies in spring, ending with a Rocky Mountaineer 2-day journey.

Left: East Anglian Jigsaw Club cut DMcD 1959 250pc Canadian Winter, 14.5x12in - an extreme push-fit line-cut jigsaw. As my progress shots show, this proved almost as difficult as Fruit. The pieces are on a pine-like plywood and the cuts seem quite wide and the fits a bit imprecise. It is probably just that without a frame or right-angle to work against it's easy for the jigsaw's alignment to skew and the true shape of holes to be disguised. The pieces have a few dings and marks.

There were some deceptive bits - too many internal straight edges, a truncated dog hidden by a snow-covered branch or bank and the top of pine trees supposedly 'surrounded by sky' that was actually blue snow. The first bit I did was the turquoise sky - after that progress slowed dramatically. I was glad when I reached the endgame, because the mountains fought me all the way.

The Club address was 112 Gurney Court Rd, St Albans Herts and this jigsaw card says it was in circulation from Nov 1968 - Oct 1969 (can't make out the last date stamp, and I suspect this wasn't the first loan label attached to the jigsaw). It was marked complete in April 2008. Puzzles were originally cut for family use by Rev Rory McDougall. On his death his wife Dolly set up the Puzzle Club, expertly cutting additional puzzles herself. On her death her grandson Andrew Kershaw took over until under pressure of work it closed in 1996. I met Andrew at BCD Meetings & House Parties, although he became ill around 2017-8 and I think he's probably in a care home now.
