BCD House Party 2022 Urban Life Show & Tell Cardboard DSC06093
Top Left:
Cardboard: Marks & Spencer (Professor Puzzle, China) c500pc 12 Days of Advent, 48x34cm
It is an Advent Calendar: “Enjoy opening each of the twelve doors in the build up to the big day, collecting the puzzle pieces hidden behind each one. Then celebrate by building your own charming festive street scene”. A pretty pastel town street under snow with only a few passers-by doing Christmas tasks. A charity shop buy, this cardboard 500pc jigsaw has a grid cut with the vertical lines wandering about to produce a large variety in piece sizes & shapes.
At the front on the portapuzzle is Pomegranate 1000pc Detroit Industry by Diego Rivera, which I showed at the January 2022 virtual meeting. The jigsaw is a portion of the vast 1932-3 murals, Detroit Industry by Diego Rivera. It is a true fresco with 27 panels, covering the walls of the courtyard of the Detroit Institute of Art. Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, the husband of Frida Kahlo and committed communist, spent months in the Ford River Rouge Complex. in Dearborn. It was during a time of layoffs and industrial unrest in which five workers died. De Rivera’s monumental composition was initially notorious – placing the heroic worker at its centre.
The North Wall shows the production of Ford's famous 1932 V8 engine. In 1927, the Ford Motor Company’s many innovations included the revolutionary automated car assembly line. It was vertically integrated production, making all car components from simple materials. The North Wall murals are photographed in very high resolution on Google Arts and the half hour BBC4 radio programme in the series ‘Moving Pictures’, gave an in-depth analysis.
The jigsaw only covers the central half of the large mural. The image has a very complex structure, making it difficult to re-imagine, with layered scenes woven together with conveyor belts. Rows of machines and men recede steeply to a central vanishing point. It would be fabulous to have a panoramic line-cut version of the entire lower mural. (American laser-cutting firm Nautilus do a 609pc version of the whole lower panel measuring 28x11in and costing $180+pp+VAT.)
