BCD S&T Cardboard More Waddington Circular 500p ARP Air Raid Precautions David P IMG_1690 (1)

8 Waddington 350pc (No. 3) circular Air Raid Precautions (ARP) Design, 1941

This is the only vintage cardboard jigsaw in his collection – arguably the most interesting design in the first Waddington series (and Penny confirmed that it also the most rare and sought after). The Circular series was launched in 1939. The card used in 1941 was thin and flimsy, but this copy has survived in great condition, unlike its yellow box with black corners.

This detail shows the annular cut, with its wavy rings of pieces (created by dramatically curving shoulders to the pieces). The knobs have no necks and are similar sized but their position on the shoulders varies dramatically. You can see tapered and triangular pieces, which fit in pairs in the rings.

Air Raid Precautions (ARP) puzzle illustrates the organisations & activities which protected British civilians during air raids, with 1.5 million people serving over the course of WWII. The organization was later called the Civil Defence Service.

David’s jigsaw is on Jigasaurus as well as flickr.
