3 Jigsaw-related games for the Occulus Go Quest 2 virtual reality headset: Puzzling Places, Jigsaw 360 &

Cubism

David A showed still images and videos of three different types of virtual reality puzzles he had tried out with his Quest 2 VR headset. Unlike the shortage in supply of real puzzles during the pandemic, there were no issues in buying these if you already had the headset.

His first used a 3D scan of the isle of Mont St Michel, from the game Puzzling Places which has the highest customer rating of any game on the Quest 2. The piece counts can be up to 400, with the pieces surrounding you all around the room, so the puzzle can be assembled in mid-air while standing up – no fighting over the best table or lighting! The level of detail on the building & location scans is phenomenal, and as you zoom into the image the sounds change to be appropriate. Some images like the ruined castle are modelled inside and out so the pieces are 2-sided, making a single image.

In Jigsaw 360, where the guide picture surrounds you on the inside of a sphere while you stand in the middle (like some of the exotic film formats you can see in Disneyworld). The jigsaw can be made up from up to 200 pieces onto a flat virtual board, or in this case on the surface of another smaller sphere within the guide picture, which is much more confusing when you turn in the virtual space. You can also add your own equirectangular images from Flickr or the supplier’s website.

Another popular puzzle game on the Quest 2 is Cubism which is a 3D game based on pentominoes. It comes with lovely background music and plays a different chord for each puzzle completed from the 90 different puzzles, some of which are incredibly complex with internal voids. This game can be played just using your hands without the need to use game controllers, which increases the realism.
