Five Large Victory Jigsaws Along The Seine by E Rene His 18

This is an attractive painting by Rene Charles Edmond His and I have two Victory versions in my collection - one bought early on and a later upgrade. Both are Victory Populars, a 500pc and 1000pc, which coincidentally cost £8 each. An American example has appeared in Bob Armstrong's 2021 Fall Sale, so I am indebted to Bob (and Wikipedia) for his identification of and research about the artist.

"Artist is René Charles Edmond His (or Charles Edmond Rene-His) (1877—1960), who signed his paintings René His or E. René-His, a formally trained French painter known for landscapes, especially of rivers, and for Orientalist scenes inspired by travel in Algeria. Coming of age and achieving early success at the end of the 1800s, His carried into the twentieth century the rigorous Academic standards and pre-Impressionist realism of earlier French artists like Jean-Léon Gérôme. After the large virtuoso paintings that launched his career, he settled into a steady production of riverine landscapes of more conventional dimensions with exquisite colors and illusionistic depictions of light on still water. He exhibited in the Paris Salon virtually every year of his long career, and his paintings found collectors throughout his lifetime and beyond, especially in France and Great Britain, less so in the United States."

Top Left: Victory Popular 800pc, 24x18in

Top Right & Centre Right: Two copies of Victory Pop 1000pc, 28x22in the top one is my lucky upgrade for £8 from May 2017, the middle one sold for £25 in Nov 2015.

Victory Popular jigsaws are fairly standard, interlocking strip cuts, which blend well into the image. The boxes carry large guide pictures, and I've seen 350pc, 500pc, 800pc and 1000pc Victory Pop versions of this image over the years.

Lower Centre & Lower Right: Victory, Victory Gold Box 1000pc version, measuring 28x22in. This has a similar background cut to the Popular but includes whimsies. In this case the whimsies aren't particularly shapely, but I have seen examples of late Gold Box jigsaws where they are worse. This jigsaw sold for £30 in Feb 2017.

Centre & Lower Left: Victory Gold Box Super Cut 1000pc, which includes a wavy edge, some line-cutting and whimsies incorporated more skilfully into the image. This 1000pc version, 28x22in, sold in April 2017 for £77 by a well known BCD member who seems to have had camera problems. (The 300pc Super Cut made £98 in June 2021.) You can see how variable ebay prices are for a relatively common Victory jigsaw - and the importance of good photos and a following for a seller.
