Optimago 700pc The Spoils of War Black & White Jigsaw 5

Some black & white jigsaws from my records for Billsville Mike, who is creating a gallery of these unusual jigsaws. This is Optimago 700pc Engraving Spoils of War, size 55x66cm. The engraving is after Robert Short & published by John Boydell in London c1748.

This 700pc Optimago jigsaw is the more common of two black & white Optimago jigsaws I know of. I bought a copy of this at a BCD meeting which I hope is complete (or at least has replacement pieces) but which I've not done yet.

I've spotted this for sale ten times with prices ranging from £6-£19. Although I'm not impressed by Optimago's cutting style I thought the large piece count and difficult image would make this one a challenge. The box is in the style of a large box-file.

The box text:

"During the years 1748-51 John Boydell published a series of portraits of the French & Spanish ships captured by the British Fleet under the commands of Lord Anson, Sir Peter Warren, Captain Buckle & Sir E Hawke. In the 18thC the struggle for colonial & maritime supremacy between Britain and the Bourbon powers of France & Spain raged all over the world. In 1747, Lord Anson, Vice Admiral of the Blue and Rear-Admiral Sir Peter Warren, lay in wait off Finisterre in NW France for the French Fleet under Admiral de la Jonquiere. They attacked nine French ships and eight Indiamen carrying reinforcements and supplies to the East Indies and Canada and they captured six ships and four Indiamen.

The engraving used for this jigsaw puzzle shows a stern view of the Jason and a head on view of the Ruby, and in the middle of that the Diamond, three of the French ships captured by the British Fleet off the coast of Finisterre."
