Two Vintage Seaside Jigsaws Expert & Victory 3
Two vintage jigsaws from my records which I came across when looking for the theme 'Holiday Destinations'. The surfing I did on 'Pierrot troupes' and the links postulated with 'blackface Minstrel troupes' caused me to look at the top jigsaw with renewed interest - I had already noted the bathing machines in connection with Constable's & early paintings/prints of Brighton, and the Salmon postcard jigsaws of Edwardian Llandudno shown by Robin at the meeting Show & Tell.
Upper half - Vintage Expert type cut 250pc Edwardian Seaside Scene. This charming scene shows a late Victorian or Edwardian beach scene with crowds surrounding a pair of entertainers, two tots being buried in sand, children playing in the water, bathing machines, yachts, and a mum in a deckchair being presented with a crab. I have no information about the artist, date of the painting/illustration or the country depicted. The jigsaw was sold in Dec 2013, by a Canadian BCD member. The cut is continuous and identified as an Expert, but as there is no photo of a box to identify which brand was used.
There is a ZigZag version of this print on Jigasaurus:
www.thejigasaurus.com/index.php/zig_zag/in_the_sands
ZigZag 350pc In the Sands 18x9in, 14fig. c1920.
Lower Half: Faded Victory 800pc Seaside Scene by Fred Morgan. The box is identified as the earliest one in the 1999 study on Victory Jigsaws by BCD member Brian Price - 1928-early 1930s. The fully interlocking jigsaw has about 16 regularly placed whimsies but sadly four missing pieces and some staining, particularly around the top left corner. he whimsies are shown in another collage of Fred Morgan vintage jigsaws. Fred Morgan had paintings featured in the Pears Annuals, including the seaside scene Sea Horses ('Giddy-Up'), but I don't know the name of the one in this Victory jigsaw. The jigsaw was sold cJune 2013.
