BCD Three Holiday Destinations From Nicki from Rob Garner & Mr Lee 3
Here are Nicki's Show & Tell jigsaws for the June 2021 virtual meeting, themed Holiday Destinations. Nicki sent in photos of four jigsaws, all from strong areas of her collection - commissions to Rob Garner of Amber Puzzles and Library Puzzles.
Top Left: Amber (Rob Garner) 400pc La Corse. Cut in 2012 from a vintage French Railway travel poster advertising travel to Corsica via train and ferry. No 135 in Nicki’s collection of puzzles cut by Rob Garner of Amber Jigsaw Puzzles, Devon.
Rob has cut this one in push fit style with an interlocking border with earlet shaped knobs. It has his heart and R whimsies. The bright roofs going in all directions, all tightly colour-line cut, make it a delightful challenge.
Right: Amber 400pc Falmouth Harbour, Cornwall by Serena. Cut by Rob Garner in 2012 as a commission. This time entirely push fit (shallow single knobs), exquisitely colour-line cut, with Rob’s heart and R whimsies. Nicki saw Serena’s artwork used by Silverton Puzzle Company, a small short-lived family company making high quality laser puzzles near Exeter c2010. Serena is a Cornish artist who produces these wonderful “seagull-eye” views of Cornish fishing villages, full of incident & colour, ideally suited as line-cut images, and marketed in the West Country tourist areas. Spot the 'Oggy Oggy Pasty Shop' and the breach of health & safety rules!
Lower Left: Mr Lee for British Library 224pc St Ives, Cornwall a painting by Stanley Roy Badmin c 1950. Bought from Dave Cooper in 2006. View of the town and chuch, looking towards the sea from higher ground. Although small at 224 pieces, Lee’s superb colour-line cutting, and massed buildings and rooftops makes it a really good jigsaw and difficult for its piece count. Nicki was convinced one of the edge pieces was missing until she was down to the very last piece.
("I was convinced one of the edge pieces…..the white triangle 2/3 of the way up on the left hand side was missing until I was down to the very last piece.")
Below Mrs Thompson for A1 Puzzle Club 500pc Ventnor Isle of Wight. Circular jigsaw 24in across from a 1920-30s travel poster, cut in an interlocking loopy style, with line-cutting, particularly of the girl.
"The A1 puzzle Club flourished in the 1920’s and 1930’s with a large circulation base in both the north and south of the country. The Liverpool base was run by a Mrs O’Brien, their southern base was in Acton Vale, London. They tended to use local puzzle cutters and many of their puzzles are quite splendid, but later they incorporated puzzles from Chad Valley and Hayter, so you need to be vigilant when buying this puzzle club. Their original huge square boxes rarely survive as the brown card contained a lot of acid. This puzzle was re-housed in a replacement box in 1927 but thankfully retained the important lid top. "
