British Library Puzzles Bright Young Things A Splash of Colour 3

In her selection for A Splash of Colour, Nicki showed a vintage British Jigsaw Library push-fit jigsaw, cut by Dick Sawbridge in the 1960s, which showed a falconry scene from the Tres Riches Heures of the Duc de Berry.

I wondered what other jigsaws from the library in my records might fit the theme, particularly those cut by Dick Sawbridge.

Left: 1920s club scene by Horace Taylor - Dick Sawbrige 423pc Bright Young Things, line-cut push fit jigsaw measuring 19x14in. This was never issued according to Dave Cooper, who sold it c Jan 2018. David Shearer wrote an article about Dick Sawbridge and his jigsaw cutting career for the magazine a few years ago. The 1924 poster was one of a series, 'Brightest London & Home By Underground'.

Born in London in 1881, Horace Taylor studied at the Camden School of Art, the Royal Academy Schools in London and the Royal Academy, Munich. A painter and poster and stage designer, he worked as a cartoonist for the Manchester Guardian but from 1922 was engaged almost entirely on commercial art. He died in 1934.

Right British Jigsaw Library no 4128 cut by Peter Stokes 343pc Renoir's Dance at Bougival, 1883, 12x19.5in. A beautifully line-cut jigsaw with interesting shapes (like X chromosomes) in the white dress. This couple belong to a generation before the clubbers on the left. According to Tom Dick Sawbridge & Peter Stokes both began cutting for the Library in the 1970s under Carolyn Beves. David Shearer sold this c July 2020. There are far fewer sales of Peter Stokes's work in my records than of Dick Sawbridge.
