Six Vintage Elephant Jigsaws 2

BCD Friday Talk

Pete included a Wentworth Ele-Things tessellation cut jigsaw in his talk about jigsaws with an oriental image, so I thought I'd put together a vintage elephant collage. The elephant state processions also qualify for the theme 'A Splash of Colour'.

Top Left: Victory Gold Box Artistic 300pc Elephant Attacked by a Tiger, 1pcmiss. An exciting image, with a few whimsies including a shapely plane.

Top Centre & Right: Leigham Puzzle Club 437pc Elephant Procession, 4pcmiss, 43x30cm, push-fit. The jigsaw was sold in Nov 2017, renovated by Howard Smeeton of HS Puzzles and resold in June 2019. The subject matter was also used for by Chad Valley - 200pc State Elephants.

Centre: poor, small photos of Delta 700pc Tiger Shooting in Nepal, measuring 24x17.5in. The colours and the treatment of the tiger and long grass are very attractive.

Lower Left: Vintage 1000pc Elephants Towing the Guns by Stanley L Wood, owner thought dated 1920s. Sold by BCD member John in Dec 2012. I couldn't find anything out about this painting on the internet though there were a few photos showing similar scenes from the 1850s to early 20thC.

Lower Cente: Glevum 150pc Indian Elephant Hunting 13x11in a continuous globular cut, in a blue box. Sold Aug 2016.

Lower Right: Magnificent shaped Holtzapffel Figure-It-Out 524pc Elephants in Full Regalia by Gordon Nichol, from a poster for Anchor Line to Gibraltar, Egypt & India, c1932, c24in. Wonderful jigsaw sold in April 2014. See Jigasaurus for more photos.

Stanley Llewellyn Wood (1866 – 1928) was a prolific Welsh illustrator who travelled widely. He was known for his portrayals of horses in action and also for his black-and-white illustrations for the Captain Kettle stories by C. J. Cutcliffe Hyne. He was an accomplished artist, having work accepted by the Royal Academy up to 1905, as follows:

1892- 361 Royal Horse Artillery going into action, Afghan Campaign.

1894 - 391 A battle incident, horse artillery going in under fire.

1895 - 107 Halting the battery, Horse Artillery coming into position.

1897 - 1009 A surrender under protest, an incident in the Matabele war.

1903 - 574 A bucking broncho, souvenir of Texas.

His illustrations of the Anglo-Boer War appeared in Black & White and Black & White Budget. Most of these featured equestrian scenes. Some of these illustrations also appeared in L'Illustré Soleil du Dimanche and one appeared as a cover illustration for War Pictures. He worked for War Illustrated during World War I.
