Six Indian Image Vintage Jigsaws 8
A collection of jigsaws with Indian subjects for the BCD Friday talk, Oriental themed jigsaws. (Jigsaws from India, Africa, the Americas and polar regions would have been my focus for the topic 'Beyond Europe's Shores', which was one suggested for a cancelled meeting early in the pandemic in 2020.)
Top Left: Vintage 900pc Indian Sweet -Stuff Shop, 3repl, 24.8x18in. An interlocking edge surrounds a centre where pieces have few and shallow knobs, but only a little line-cutting. A fragment of the original box and label survived - brown cardboard and hand-written in black ink. A classic large jigsaw, sold c June 2016.
Top Centre: Victory Gold Box 800pc Pounding Grain in India by ES Hardy, 24x18in. This was sold by a BCD member in Feb 2020, and deserved to make a higher price. The image is lovely although the jigsaw is late and has very shapeless whimsies. I came upon another fine vintage version when making these notes, a 627pc in a wallpaper wrapped box sold by Bronwen in 2015 (which I think might be by Rablah). Victory also did a jigsaw called 'Preparing Mealies in East Africa' by A Lambe, which shows an essentially similar activity.
Top Right: Victory Gold Box 600pc On An Indian River, 18x18in. Another glorious image, late example with shapeless whimsies, sold in Dec 2020 - for three times the price of the larger jigsaw next to it. Such is the random nature of ebay auctions. (We have seen examples of ES Hardy's African River Life at BCD meetings too - see below.)
Lower Left: Retired British Jigsaw Library, cut by Dick Sawbridge 397pc Indian Bronze Workers. A smooth push-fit with line-cutting, measuring 13x19in. This jigsaw once belonged to Pete, sold in March 2019.
Lower Centre & Right: Pair of Victory Gold Box 800pc jigsaws, Indian Washing Day by ES Hardy. Centre is an 800pc Super Cut, with wavy edge and line-cutting, sold in March 2013. Right a standard 800pc VGB, with a late shapeless whimsy set, sold in Aug 2018.
