Two Contrasting Vintage Jigsaws Southport Sea Bathing Pool F Matania 1
Two contrasting examples of great jigsaws cut from a tourist poster, Sea Bathing Pool at Southport by Fortunino Matania. This artist is well known in vintage jigsaw circles - his work appears in many jigsaws, especially the AVN Jones South African and Australian Series and most of the Chad Valley Illustrated Newspapers Series. Examples can be found by searching on the Jigasaurus site.
Top Right - A1 Puzzle Club 1000pc Bathing Beauties, c 1920. Unfortunately a poor photo of this jigsaw, which uses two thirds of the poster - see below. (There is a better photo available on pg59 of Tom Tyler's book British Jigsaw Puzzles of the 20thC.) This jigsaw has 1000-1500pc, including 5repl, is at least semi-interlocking and was sold from the estate of Dave Cooper around July 2019.
All the Other Images show Edenbridge 641pc The Sea Bathing Pool at Southport, measuring 68x55cm, a jigsaw which appeared in a lecture by stgenix at the BCD 2017 House Party. Although I spotted it there, I didn't really register what a great decorative cut it has, a cut which is difficult to describe but includes plenty of line-cutting. (The other tell-tale sign of an Edenbridge puzzle is the plain brown box with stencilled lettering.) This jigsaw only uses about half of the poster. It was sold on ebay recently for a large sum - sadly not to me.
