BCD House Party Two Small Eric Pedley Jigsaws Selworthy Cottage & Shells DSC07726
The charming Eric Pedley jigsaw, Shells. The current owner of the British Jigsaw Library bought this little jigsaw from a former owner of the library, when he contacted her to learn more about the club, its practices, members and stock. I can see why she hung on to it for so long. It is superbly line-cut, large areas have rectangular smooth lines and the edge interlocks with spirals.
This little 171pc jigsaw (Cottage at Selworthy Somerset, 10x7.5in) first entered my records in Oct 2013, when it was sold on ebay by a BCD member who would later become a penpal and good friend. The buyer sold it a month later and I was so impressed by their combined reports that I bought it myself, at a time when I had very few vintage jigsaws. It was described as ex Puzzle Club, but I believe on stylistic grounds that it was cut by Eric Pedley.
When I finally did it at the 2020 BCD House Party, I realised why those previous owners had rated it - it is really quite tricky! I finished it very late at night, bleary-eyed with two other puzzlers standing over me waiting to lock up the room. There are smooth push-fit areas - the cottage front is very deceptive, that spiral feature over the thatch and large numbers of the broad knobs are divided - including a bit of edging on the right. Many of these features can be found in 'Owl' (see below), my jigsaw 'Bubbles' and the superb 'Yoga', owned by another jigsaw penpal.
