BCD Two Copies of Holtzapffel 600pc St Augustine Preaching Before Ethelbert 3
The jigsaw on the left was sold in the auction of Dave Cooper's jigsaws at the November 2019 meeting and assembled at the 2020 House Party.
Lot 16 – Holtzapffel, Augustine preaching before King Ethelbert, 600pc, complete 3repl, 23.5x17.3in, wooden box, est£120 – START £140 MADE £180
This was the first medium-large rectangular Holtzapffel to be auctioned with an attractive fine-art image and extensive line-cutting. It is housed in a wooden box.
The two details on the right are from the example of this jigsaw on Jigasaurus whose cut features more push-fit pieces with few knobs. The jigsaw was sold on by David Shearer in April 2014, but unfortunately I didn't record the price. Painted by the prolific British artist/illustrator Henry Justice Ford (1860-1941), this important and colourful religious scene depicts the Benedictine monk Augustine, soon to become First Archbishop of Canterbury, preaching to King Ethelbert, shortly to become England's first Christian King.

Dave Cooper, cutter, enthusiast and former owner of the British Jigsaw Library, passed away this summer and his most prestigious jigsaws were auctioned at the November 2019 BCD Meeting. 31 puzzles formed 28 lots - all of which were sold. Tom Tyler was the auctioneer and overseas and absent members were able to make postal or 'book' bids. Most of the lots were sold to UK members, but some will be leaving Britain. A high proportion of the lots were vintage Holtzapffel jigsaws - guaranteeing a high turnout for the meeting.
