DSC01834 BCD Nov19 Auction Lot18 Holtzapffel Three Jolly Dutchmen adj

Lot 18 – Holtzapffel, Three Jolly Dutchmen, 1000pc, complete possible replacements, 31x19.3in, replacement box, est£140 – START £100 MADE £390

This was the third large rectangular Holtzapffel to be auctioned with an attractive and collectable image and it made the scond highest price in the auction, and confirmed the price-point for these jigsaws. The auction contained 5 Holtzapffel puzzles with piece counts in the range 900-1100pc, which seldom come to market. These sold for £390, £360, £355, 3350 and £210. I've only recorded 3 sales on ebay UK since 2013, of two jigsaws (one sold twice).

Dave Cooper, cutter, enthusiast and former owner of the British Jigsaw Library, passed away this summer and his most prestigious jigsaws were auctioned at the November 2019 BCD Meeting. 31 puzzles formed 28 lots - all of which were sold. Tom Tyler was the auctioneer and overseas and absent members were able to make postal or 'book' bids. Most of the lots were sold to UK members, but some will be leaving Britain. A high proportion of the lots were vintage Holtzapffel jigsaws - guaranteeing a high turnout for the meeting.
