DSC01264 Dick Sawbridge British Jigsaw Library Kingfisher from Butterfly Ball Rear
The rear of the larger of my two vintage versions of this illustration by Alan Aldridge to the 1973 book The Butterfly Ball by William Plomer. It is a 333pc jigsaw no4607 cut by Dick Sawbridge for the British Jigsaw Library. (The second, which is damaged, c250pc jigsaw cut by Enid Stocken of Leisure and Pleasure.)
This is a push-fit plywood jigsaw - so fiddly - but quite large (about 14x21in). The line cutting of the image can be easily traced. The bold colours and distinct areas made it reasonably easy even without a guide image (finished in one short evening session). The print has some large bubbles where it is separating from the plywood.
The box is a typical British Library box - sturdy stapled brown cardboard (reused from an earlier jigsaw) with a paper label. I bought it second (!) hand from the former owner of the library. The address on the label is Old Homend, Stretton Grandison, Ledbury, Herts HR8 2TW (when the box was last actively circulated). This predates a Library move of ownership to Pearl Compton in 1986, when it was based in Leamington Spa.
