Vintage 250pc Dutch Canal Luck to Elizabeth Barton Court DSC02836
A detail from one of six jigsaws I own cut by an enigmatic unknown cutter from the early 1930s. All the jigsaws feature a very high proportion of extremely inventive (if sometimes crudely shaped) whimsies and personal messages or New Year greetings to the named owner.
The first ones (four) I bought were owned by a Mr Thomason and associated in some way with the Red Triangle Boys Club, in the Liverpool Docks. All the jigsaws come in sturdy plain stapled brown boxes with typed labels. Others are associated with large houses (in this case Elizabeth of ‘Barton Court’, in another case ‘Black Cap’ 1929 Hillbre House).
This one the fifth was not from the first seller (a relative of Mr Thomason). It is 250pc On a Dutch Canal by Henriette Hubregtse-Lanzing (1879-1959). The cut includes the message 'Luck to Elizabeth' and the box label includes typed 'Barton Court' and handwritten Elizabeth in pencil and the piece count in ink. Others from the same source can be seen below:
1 Sailing Ship Sophocles, shaped top 330pc Luck be with you in 1933 Thomason
2 Capetown Market 360pc Fortune is coming to Ted and his Family
3 The Man who threw a snowball in Switzerland - All good things to you all
4 Sailing ship - smaller but no message (not made up yet)
6 The Passing of the Black Cap 435pc Health and Happiness Hilbre House (not made up yet)
The artist of Dutch Canal, Henriette Hubregstse-Lanzing, was born in Maastricht and died in The Hague. As a young woman, she lived and worked in Amsterdam and Haarlem where she met and married A. M. Hubregtse. In 1914, they moved to Dutch East India where they lived until 1926, then moving to Switzerland (until 1933), Bussum (1933-49) and finally to The Hague. She was primarily a painter of portraits, animals and flowers, although in the Dutch East Indies she painted the dramatic landscapes, so different from her home in Holland. She was a member of the Artists’ Society in Laren-Blaricum.
