Matsumoto Old House adj DSC01333
Marsumoto still has a large number of old wooden buildings which Aki pointed out whilst we were walking to the castle. We took some photos on the way back, but it was rther dark by then.
Nakamachi Street is often also referred to as Old Street or old house street. This is because the buildings and houses along this street have been restored to their tradition look. - See more at:

One of the older buildings, a historic Kura |(Japanese warehouse) dating to 1781, houses a radio museum - radio broadcasting started here in 1925.

There is also a folkcraft museum and a traditional Miyaji Matsumoto house open as a museum. I was keen to see the Japan Ukiyo-e Museum but unfortunately it was only open for a short time that afternoon and it would have meant missing the castle.
Featuring over 10,000 pieces of ukiyo-e (traditional woodblock prints), the Japan Ukiyo-e Museum is the largest private museum of its kind in the world. Apparently a very limited selection (2 rooms, about 40 prints) are on display. The collection was begun over 200 years ago by Yoshiaki Sakai and includes many pieces from the most famous ukiyo-e artists in history as well as works that are believed to be the last remaining examples of their kind.
