Thomason Jigsaw Capetown Market Fortune Is Coming adj IMG_0279
One of the four of my puzzles made for Mr E (Ted) Thomason and cut in 1925 by the unknown maker associated with the Red Triangle Boys Club at Liverpool Docks. The cutter's work is characterised by a very high proportion of expressive whimsies - in this case almost a fifth of the 360 pieces.
This image is a painting of Capetown Market by CE Turner.
It also carries the message "FORTUNE IS COMING TO TED AND HIS FAMILY", the words punctuated by hearts. In this jigsaw we have a mixture of active people (swimmers, runners, horse rider etc), caricature profiles and animals. I like the way the whimsies reach right up to the outline. It is in the sort of sturdy brown box often associated with puzzle libraries.
The unknown maker also cut my jigsaw of the ship Sophocles by Jack Spurling, dated 1933, and The Man Who Threw A Snowball at St Moritz, a Bateson cartoon, dated 1929. There are many whimsies that appear in two or more of the jigsaws which all belonged to Mr Thomason.
