Emmanuella Delva

Emmanuella (Emma) Delva, Ph.D., is a native New Yorker, where she realized at a very early age that she wanted to pursue a career in science. Emma received a full academic scholarship to the University of Richmond, where she obtained a BS in Chemistry, with a Biochemistry concentration, and a minor in Women Studies. Emma then participated in a Post-Baccalaureate Research Training program at the Mayo Clinic, in the department of Tumor Biology, where she studied the relationship between the tumor suppressor p53 and centrosome duplication in human breast cancer cell lines subjected to genotoxic stress. Emma received her Ph.D. in Biological and Biomedical Sciences (Cell Biology), at Emory University. Her dissertation focused on understanding the cellular mechanism involved in the pathogenesis of the autoimmune skin disease, pemphigus vulgaris. While at Emory, Emma received a number of awards, including a predoctoral fellowship from the National Institutes of Health, and a mentoring fellowship from the Biotechnology Institute. She also co-authored a number of peer-reviewed journal articles and reviews.

In addition to research, Emma also took pride in promoting diversity in the academic arena. As chair of the Biochemistry, Cell, and Developmental Biology Program recruitment committee and president of the Black Graduate Student Association (BGSA), Emma developed programs to assist incoming minority graduate students in transitioning into graduate school and ensuring that they continue to excel in their studies, recognize opportunities, and develop a vision for a career in the biomedical and biological sciences. Under her leadership, Emory’s chapter of BGSA received “Chapter of the Year” award from the National Black Graduate Student Association.

Emma is now a postdoctoral research fellow, at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, in the department of Immunology, studying the role of the estrogen receptor in regulating autoimmunity and influenza. She plans to ultimately integrate her love of mentoring and promoting diversity with a career in public policy.
