VFS Entertainment Business Management
Director Meeting JackOLantern 016
Created by students of Vancouver Film School, Compendium is a showcase of collaboration across entertainment industry sectors. It is a microcosm of production in the “real world”: a chance to shine a light on the best and brightest VFS has to offer, and a chance to show the extent of what we can accomplish when we combine our strengths.
Three times a year students and alumni come together to learn and create on grand scale. The result is a suite of short genre films, inspired by classic literature and seasoned with the student’s own fantastical flavor. These films are distributed along with a behind the scene mini-documentary detailing the students’ journey throughout the creation process.
Fans of “twisted takes on genre classics” will appreciate the Compendium volumes; each dedicated to the works of a different literary master. To date, the students have created films based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft, Homer’s Odyssey, J.M.Barrie’s Neverland, classic fairy tales, Frank Baum’s World of Oz, and Lewis Caroll’s Alice in Wonderland. Now with Compendium volume VII, we are about to tackle “Jack of All Tales” - a mashup of Jack the Ripper and classic “Jack” nursery rhymes.
Compendium strives to encourage cooperation between industry sectors such as motion and graphic design, classical and 3D animation, filmmaking, visual effects, game design, sound design, makeup, acting, writing, producing and marketing. For student and alumni participants in Compendium, it is an opportunity to test personal limits, work harder ever before, learn more and learn faster than ever before, make dozens of new and lasting industry connections, produce amazing work to be proud of, and have more fun than anyone that sleep-deprived has a right to…
