Thomas Bartol, Computational Neurobiologist, Salk Institute 008635

Thomas Bartol is a Computational Neurobiologist with the Salk Institute. In addition to a sea of papers on the functioning of the brain, Thomas has written a software application for the Salk Institute called Mcell which helps us see simulations of the brain in action. Thomas talks about how his work was enhanced by using Free Open Source Software, and why he chose to publish his software as Free Open Source Software. Thomas also talks about the greater relationship between science and open publication of scientific findings. It is only recently that "intellectual property" has resulted in scientific work being guarded closed. Thomas says that the longer tradition of science has been founded on the ability of scientists to test each other's work by duplicating their processes.
