Brian Cox as Captain Ahab
One of my favourite theatre experiences, I went back to see it several times. Manchester's amazing, 'In-the-round', Royal Exchange Theatre in 1983/84. Minimalist, the rowing in the boats was mimed, but the audience was made to feel no less than out there in the ocean. A production of incredible raw energy, naturalism & emotion.
Originally it was to have had Patrick McGoohan as Ahab. It's hard now to see anyone bettering Brian Cox. He was just this electrifying & very natural force of nature.
It was I think one of the last to be directed by the one of greatest theatre directors ever, the much missed: Michael Elliott.
