Cold weather=hot lunch
potatoes au gratin with sliced grape tomatoes on the side and a nice slice of cake with lunch!
recipe for the potatoes
approx 4 pounds of potatoes
(I used fingerlings, just what I had)
sliced thin and left raw with the skin
2 T butter smeared all over a 9x13 glass pan
2/3 cup milk mixed with
1 egg and
1/2 a red onion sliced thinly and
3 cloves of garlic also sliced thinly
4 oz of sharp cheese (I had vintage white cheddar...so that is what i used) grated coarsely
oven 375 degrees
slice potatoes thinly, i did it by hand since they were small
put one layer on the buttered pan
then sprinkle about 1/3 of the cheese and grind pepper and sea salt over the top with a sprinkle of nutmeg then another layer of potatoes, seasonings and cheese and then another layer....ending with the cheese and seasoning each layer......pour the milk/egg/onion mixture over the top and then sprinkle about 2 handfuls of bread crumbs (I used homemade fresh crumbs)
bake uncovered for 50-60 minutes until it is nice and crusty bubbly but not too brown
let sit about 3-5 minutes before cutting and serving
super yummy , would be great with a green salad but not saucy enough for me to think of it as a side dish to meat, this to me is the main dish
