A7R + Zuiko 1.4/50 + arw + Fotoxx
Amazing what a difference a new software can make: Fotoxx.
The desire to use arw stems from the higher bits: 14 for arw, only 8 for jpg. The lower jpg 8 bits cause most of my blue skies to display bands: the higher arw 14 bits have no banding. [We have only say 10 days of blue skies yearly in Shanghai, so I want each sky to be picture perfect].
The difficulty with Sony arw is the inherent noise: all other software has shown this, and it's very difficult to remove from photos. Also, Sony arw are in fact compressed, but without too much loss [so I am told]. The difficulties were too great for me prior: great investment of time to learn and to actually use.
But Fotoxx changes all of this. I can now open arw files without noise, and the app enables me to very quickly and easily perform the lens profiling edits needed: to wit, a touch of added brightness, contrast, sharpen. The Zuiko lens and Sony sensor are so good imho, no other edits are needed. The final result is imho an image with excellent colours, gradations, contrasts, resolution.
Obviously, I recommend all Linux users to try this new Fotoxx. The new 16 release is the one to install.
of course, I would prefer Sony had 16 bit uncompressed RAW capability.
[note1: This Zuiko lens is MC, vintage ca 1985]
[note2: All lenses must be profiled to the sensor. Normally, this is done by the manufacturer for dedicated cam/lens via the internal softwares. I use legacy lenses, which have no profiles, and thus I must use post-pro to properly match the cam/lens.]
