Methimazole is the most common antithyroid (thionamide) medication used in cats.
Methimazole is available in tablets and as a transdermal patch. The transdermal patch has fewer side effects than the tablets.
Other side effects may include: hematologic problems, hepatopathy, and self-induced facial excoriations (Stortz, et al., 2004).
The biggest advantage of this medication is that it is inexpensive.
