The Elephant
These wild elephants were eating deep in the forest undergrowth in Corbett National Park and they were noisy! They eat by pulling at the tall lantana grass or the leaves from the trees, smash them against the undergrowth to rid these of dust and loose soil and then eat them. This elephant was a young adult female accompanied by her kids, a juvenile tusker and an even younger calf. Adult tuskers are 30%-40% larger and can be truly terrifying. Had this one been a male, seeing us this close he would have charged and most likely killed us! Females are much more docile but if she had seen a threat to her calves, she most certainly have charged us. We had to be deathly quiet!
Elephants fear no one in the jungle except the Tiger. An angry Tiger will charge and attack an elephant if her cubs are threatened. Tigers attack from an Elephant's rear and dig their claws into the skin, causing fearsome pain to these animals. Tigers have been known to kill elephants in battle so they rule the jungle!
